GitHub Slip Exposes OpenAI’s Four-Tier GPT-5 Lineup

  • GitHub briefly posted and then deleted a blog revealing OpenAI’s forthcoming GPT-5 suite. The post said GPT-5 is now available in GitHub models and brings major gains in reasoning, code quality, and user experience.

  • The archive shows four versions—gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, gpt-5-nano, and gpt-5-chat—each tuned for logic-heavy tasks, cost sensitivity, low-latency use, and multimodal enterprise chat respectively. GitHub claims the models have enhanced agentic abilities and can tackle complex coding with minimal prompting.

  • The leak lands hours before OpenAI’s scheduled “LIVE5TREAM” reveal at 10 AM PT. It caps a week in which OpenAI also released two GPT-OSS open-weight models, including one small enough to run locally.

Trump Threatens 100% Chip Tariff With Carveout for U.S. Manufacturers

  • President Donald Trump vows to impose a 100% tariff on imported semiconductors while exempting firms that manufacture in the United States. He disclosed the plan Wednesday but offered no accompanying rule text.

  • The administration has not clarified how much domestic production earns an exemption, leaving the scope of the policy open. Shares of TSMC, Samsung and SK Hynix jumped after analysts said their substantial U.S. plant investments would likely shield them.

  • JPMorgan’s James Sullivan said exempting the largest chipmakers would concentrate market share further in their hands. Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon noted that if tariffs spread beyond raw chips to the components inside consumer devices, the shock would hit smartphones, PCs and cars alike.

Amazon’s New Alexa+ AI Assistant Stumbles in Real-World Testing

  • Amazon has begun rolling out Alexa+, a generative AI overhaul of its voice assistant, to “many millions” of customers. The upgrade is free for now and activates through a simple QR-code setup on new Echo devices.

  • Alexa+ taps models from Anthropic and Amazon’s Nova and links to OpenTable, Uber, Ticketmaster, and Thumbtack to handle bookings and purchases. It also promises deeper personal help by reading calendars, emails, and shopping accounts and by remembering user data on command.

  • TechCrunch’s initial hands-on found the assistant often misheard commands, botched calendar entries, mismanaged deal tracking, and delivered partial answers. The reviewer says the experience feels like beta software, casting doubt on Alexa’s bid to reclaim the smart-home spotlight.

AI Meeting Notetakers Leak Off Record Remarks in Automated Summaries

  • AI notetakers in Zoom, Google Meet, and other platforms are automatically emailing summaries that capture every aside, joke, and gripe spoken during calls. Recipients have seen transcripts repeating a “Nigerian prince” jab, lunch debates about sandwich ingredients, and even a pet’s vomiting saga.

  • Zoom’s AI Companion has generated more than 7.2 million summaries through January 2024 and flags its presence with a flashing diamond icon. Google Meet shows a blue pencil icon and audio cue, with both services limiting the on-off switch to meeting hosts or their organizations.

  • Surprised professionals are already censoring themselves or shifting to private chat after seeing personal remarks surface in shared notes. Others save the funniest excerpts in Slack channels, proving the ever-listening AI is already changing workplace conversation.

Indian Cities Turn AI Into a Street-Level Fix for Cattle Leaks and Litter

  • Surat, Pune, Aurangabad, Jabalpur and other municipalities are rolling out AI systems to spot stray cattle, detect water leaks, flag illegal buildings and handle citizen queries. Cameras, digital twins, GIS tools and chatbots feed real-time alerts to civic staff who issue fines or dispatch crews on the spot.

  • Surat’s platform has logged 1,545 cattle incidents, levying ₹18.4 lakh in fines, and separately issued 12,120 spitting challans and 35,382 littering notices worth another ₹25.6 lakh. Pune’s AI pilot cut non-revenue water to 25% in one zone, while Jabalpur’s 3D mapping uncovered unreported expansions on 20% of properties, adding ₹30 crore in tax.

  • Surat credits the tech for its high score in the national Swachh Survekshan cleanliness survey, and Pune is extending its leak-detection system to 15 more zones after the trial success. National programmes like the Smart City Mission and Safe City project have already installed AI traffic and surveillance tools in every tier-1 and many tier-2 cities, making the approach standard practice.
