AI-Powered Microscopy Spots Dangerous Platelet Clumps Without Invasive Tests

University of Tokyo researchers deployed a high-speed frequency-division multiplexed microscope coupled with AI to watch platelets clump in real time. The method tracks clot formation in coronary artery disease patients using only a routine arm-vein blood sample, avoiding invasive catheter draws.
The AI sorts thousands of images per second to distinguish single platelets, aggregates, and white blood cells in flow. In tests on over 200 patients, those with acute coronary syndrome displayed more platelet aggregates than chronic cases, confirming the system's diagnostic sensitivity.
The images expose substantial variability in how patients respond to standard antiplatelet drugs, explaining why some still experience clots or bleeding. This evidence comes from simple venous samples, removing the need for catheter-based arterial draws to gauge clot risk.

AI Study Shows Emissions Cuts Can Outpace Data Center Pollution

Grantham Research Institute finds AI could eliminate up to 5.4 billion metric tons of climate pollution a year by 2035, exceeding the emissions from running AI data centers. The peer-reviewed work appears in npj Climate Action and examines practical applications in energy, transportation and food.
Researchers calculate that AI operations may emit 0.4 to 1.6 billion metric tons of CO2 over the next decade, yet targeted AI deployments can offset that by as much as fivefold. Use cases include smarter renewable integration, battery improvements for electric vehicles, and designing protein alternatives to meat and dairy.
The authors say government action on energy-efficient models, renewable-powered data centers and equitable AI infrastructure is essential to realize these gains. They note that optimizing power grids alone can yield cuts larger than the entire European Union’s annual emissions.
